The first of our I Can Be She workshops have kicked off already, with some great discussions from some really fantastic young women!
We started off on the University of East London campus, where the older girls, aged 18-22, discussed cultural differences, family relationships and the inspiring achievements of women close to them. Most of the girls were inspired by relatives or friends, which really goes to show that everyday achievements, and qualities like kindness and dedication, often mean more than fame and fortune.
At our second workshop, at the Kiran Project in Leyton, we learnt more about the achievements of women through history and today. The girls at this workshop were aged twelve and up, and although some were shy to begin with, everyone had lots to say about making your own religious decisions and being confident about your own identity. I think anyone thinking of judging a Muslim woman for her clothing would think twice after speaking to the headstrong, articulate and witty young people who took part!
